The Story Itself

Regarding the event's length

People weren't kidding when they said this event was long. It's even longer than And I Will, and that one was supposed to be a half-anniversary event! While I'm glad we're getting events that we can really dig our teeth into, I can't help but wonder why did they choose to hyperfocus on this event? Is there an Arachnedev inside the dev team or something? And I Will could've used the extra length to flesh out the alter characters, honestly.

You might be wondering why I said "almost" instead of saying that this event being outright anniversary-tier. The biggest reason is the lack of side content, if you look at I Wish and Dive Astrum, their side contents were so big, it felt like having another event inside of an event. Everything Becomes Web is already a pretty big event, but it's "just" one event instead of feeling like two. Second, it's very small in scope, what I mean scope is the "area" the story focuses on. It "just" covered Gio Gehenna. In my opinion, anniversary events should encompass the entirerity of Princess Connect Re: Dive. There's nothing wrong with a hyperfocusing on an area, Of Cherish Bonds and Distant Hearts "just" focused on Kokkoro and it was still a fantastic event, although this could be just my Kokkoro favoritism speaking.

Honestly, I was confused on where to start when talking about this event...being a detective event, it's hard cover everything without just retelling the entire story to cover everything. As always, I'll just cover the areas that made me go "oh!". If you want to know the rest, read the story yourself!

The Foreshadowings

Boy, there are plenty here. Let's start with the earliest one I caught.

The Judge and The Ambassador

Right from the get go, the story casted doubt on the judge and ambassador.

no handshake business

The story portrays the judge as kind of a dick, as he refused Kasumi's handshake. While the ambassador seemed like a good guy at first, Kanon brought up that he might be just putting up a front since Gio Gehenna is on business with Landosol, and he probably wanted to butter up to Landosol people.

I myself thought "Ah, it must be one of them!", although my reason of thinking they were guilty is probably a bit surface-level. They're dicks. The judge is straight up a dick, so he's probably guilty. The cunt of the group of all people thinks that the ambassador might be a dick, so he must be also be a dick, and therefore also be guilty somehow.

In the end, both are guilty of different things!

The judge is guilty of framing Arachne. Kasumi figured this out by putting these three together; the fact that the judge tried to goad Kanon into capturing Arachne, the fact that the judge didn't investigate Kanon's "death" and finally, the fact that the judge was using the holy coliseum to execute an execution (heh) of all things.

guilty

The ambassador is guilty of poisoning the food in the party. His motive is that he wanted to protect Gio Gehenna from Landosol's influence. Kasumi thinks that Gio Gehenna's brutish culture has its own charm, so she understands him somewhat. But wait...how did he exactly poison the food? That brings me to my next point...

The Handshakes

I thought this was going to be just another piece of worldbuilding! As you may know, people, not just in Landosol, shake hands for various reasons. To show agreement, respect, sportsmanship, etc. People of Gio Gehenna don't do this, because they simply beat the shit out of each other to show respect. Okay, so the judge refused Kasumi's handshake because Gio Gehenna culture is deeply rooted in him, and the ambassador goes around shaking people's hands because of, well, he's the ambassador, so it's only natural for him to practice the culture of Landosol.

It got brought up twice...will it be brought up once more to make it odd?

Turns out, it did! The handshakes was how the ambassador poisoned the people in the party!

handshake

It had to do with the species of the chicken that got made into the yakitori the people in the party ate combined with a certain tree bark. Combined together, they become a deadly poison. This is how the poison got combined: first, the ambassador would eat the yakitori as usual. Then, he would slather the tree bark powder that has been dissolved into water onto his hand. Then he goes around shaking hands, putting the liquid onto the victim's hand. With the poison on the victim's hand now, the liquid would combine with the yakitori, creating the poison and killing them.

Also, the way Kasumi cornered the the ambassador was so fucking kino! She demonstrated how the poison would work, slathering the liquid onto her hand, and called in Joe to make the same yakitori that was served in the party...

And then she offers her hand for a handshake....

tch!

Obviously, the ambassador rejects, because taking her hand and eating the yakitori would kill him. Finally revealing him as the culprit.

Nana and Arachne

I've been talking about Kasumi a lot, huh? How about the new faces? They're kinda...the victims here, so they don't see as much action as her, but this doesn't mean they're shafted. For them, the story mainly focuses on Nana overcoming the trauma of backstabbing Kanon, alongside the one who puppeteered her to do said backstabbing in the first place, Arachne.

Speaking of trauma, and this may sound really cruel, but I LOVE the fact that Nana actually struggled with it. I thought it was strange that Kanon just scoffed at her and went back to buddy buddy with Nana and Nana just going along with it because well, she's Nana. Turns out, it hasn't been that simple for Nana. Right from the get go, simply hearing the name "Arachne" was enough to startle her and make her start coping "wyell, this is a different Arachne, right?"

arachne

Not only that, her nightmares start to return. Apparently, she's been reliving the moment she stabbed Kanon through her nightmares. It gradually got better...but it suddenly kicked back up when she met Arachne. Of course, she started coping again.

dreams

Her fear of Lady Arachne got so bad that when the reveal that Arachne really was Lady Arachne through Kasumi's mirror came, she tried to give Arachne a donut, dropped it, and couldn't pick it back up because she was trembling that much.

trembling

In the end, Nana outright asked Arachne to use her strings on her to beat up the judge, driving in the point that she has overcome her trauma.

allows unit to UB twice

Moving on to Arachne, she's the prime suspect of this story, and I'm happy that the characters (except for Nana maybe) treat her as such. I'm just glad that the characters, including Arachne herself, didn't simply forget that she was a gigantic (quite literally) cunt in her previous life.

First, Arachne herself reminds herself as Lady Arachane that well, she used to be Lady Arachne...

you are...me

Second, Kasumi, being the detective, objectively can't rule out the possibility that Arachne is just straight up guilty. She still acts cordial towards Arachne, but there are some moments in the story that felt like she just threw Arachne under the bus. First, right after the reveal that Arachne was indeed Lady Arachne through Kasumi's mirror, Arachne contemplated to turn herself in. Kasumi, much to Ho-chan's surprise, agreed.

follow her

Of course, the moment Arachne left, Kasumi hollered her assistant to follow her, much to Ho-chan's relieve. However, this can be looked at two ways. Was Kasumi really concerned about Arachne's safety, or was she just curious to see the outcome?

Third, Kasumi again, this time, she uses her suspicion towards Arachne to her advantage. Through the entire event the judge has always been hellbent against Arachne, and the ambassador hellbent towards Arachne. This was brought up again when Kasumi started the argument with the ambassador, why was he so hellbent on defending Arachne? His own reasoning was to protect the reputation of Gio Gehenna, people would be scared shitless to do business with Gio Gehenna if there was a 240cm spider going around poisoning people. Kasumi eventually uncovered that the real reason was to keep the real culprit a mystery to keep attention away from him, the real culprit.

keep it a mystery

Finally, Kasumi again, after both culprits were dealt with, they of course go talk to Nephi Nera. Kasumi is once again questioning Nephi Nera's decision keeping around Arachne. Nephi Nera answered that she doesn't seem threatening NOW, so there's no reason to do things now. Second, people's nature are unchanging, but outliers happen. Nephi Nera believes that Arachne will always be evil no matter how many times she reincarnates, but also believes that outliers happen, and believe that the Arachne now is said outlier. Third, every people has a light and dark side, and everyone needs to be careful not to succumb to their own darkness. She brings up the ambassador as someone who succumbed and reminds the group to keep Arachne in check, but she believes that Nana will do most of the work because of the bond they forged.

bonds

One last thing about Arachne, her schizo side really is still in there somewhere. We first see it in the Lady Kanon's Glorious revenge event, where she went schizo because Tsumugi's strings reminded her of the fact that she used to use her own strings to control people.

reminds me of something...

Here, we see it resurface once more. After Arachne turned herself in, a Landosol merchant that defected from agreeing to execute Arachne delivered a letter to Nana. Inside the letter is your usual goodbye letter, something something she lived a short life but she was glad because she had someone she could call a friend, plus telling Nana not to come to her. Obviously, Nana can't read so the letter didn't stop her. She goes to the site where Arachne is being chained up and tried to stop the people there from beating her up. Of course, Nana is treated as a conspirator and she gets beat up as well. Arachne begs them to stop, no one listens. Arachne gets pissed, goes schizo and starts beating the shit out of everyone.

yamete yo

Arachne tried to stop herself, but couldn't. She only managed to after Nana starts begging Arachne to smile again. It's cute that Arachne went schizo because she saw her friend gets beat up, and could only stop when said friend begged her to stop.

Overall Thoughts

Whew, this event was quite something. This is one of those events that I really wanted to speedrun through because I just HAD to know what would happen next. But it was physically impossible for me because of the event length and I was busy when I was reading this event.

Something I should mention that there are some points in the story that allows you to do the arguing for Kasumi, and if you do, it's possible to pick the wrong option. No punishment for being wrong, but the game does loop you back to take the option again instead of just continuing the story while someone else corrects you. That's a new thing for this game!

Of course, being a detective event, there was some shit that I didn't quite understand, which brings me to my next topic...

Difficulty

So, the event itself was easy to understand. 100% comprehension (1220/1220). Pretty long huh? For comparison, And I Will was 1040.

Also, I should be transparent, but the way I count might inflate the numbers a little bit. Most people count how long a story is by running it in auto and then simply timing counting how long that goes for. I heard this event goes for around 3 hours and a half, that's almost like watching a fucking movie! However, I count using the game's datamined story scripts through Estertion since I need the raw text to look up words I don't know.

I simply do ctrl + F voice to see how many voiced lines are in a given episode.

counting example

This is usually 100% accurate, however, due to how the multiple options work in this story, the games stores some duplicate lines, one for letting Kasumi do the arguing, and another doing the arguing yourself. However, there's not much of them, I'd estimate the duplicate lines only inflate the count by around 20ish lines. The event is still long as hell and I'm not trying to downplay it here, just wanna be transparent.

Moving on. Here are the things that I didn't quite understand:

The mystery person Kasumi met

There are two supporting characters here that helped Kasumi convict the judge and the ambassador, Tsumugi and Kanon. Tsumugi provided Kasumi with the tree bark that was used for the poison and Kanon pretended to be dead to trap the judge. However, at some point at the story, Kasumi meets a ??? that could be either one of them.

???

But...I don't see the reason why the story would need to include this scene in? We already saw Tsumugi hand over the tree bark to Kasumi, and Kanon has been in the event since the beginning, so I'm not sure why the story felt the need to cover her up if this ??? was really one of them. So..I'm confused. Who could this be and what is the purpose of this scene?

Speaking of Kanon...

The steamed buns Kanon eat

Kanon was found "dead" in the hot springs, a bunch of steamed buns was found around her so that was thought to be the cause of the death. However, we also know that people could only die if they eat the yakitori and has shaken hands with the ambassador. Of course, she really wasn't dead because she was pretending, but some lines suggest that she really did die because of the steamed buns. This is mostly played for laughs, which makes me even more confused. First, right after beating Saibantula.

really did die

Second, Nephi Nera's teasing.

korokorokoro

So...I guess the story is trying to tell me that Kanon did really pass out, indeed because of the steamed buns, but not because of the poison? Maybe the steamed buns also had the same chicken that was also used to make the yakitori? Also, if Kanon really did die...how did she get back up? Ho-chan only got back up because she's a fucking phoenix. The ambassador only pretended to be dead since we know the antidote made from Ho-chan's blood was actually her drool. Maybe it's because she's a manticore, manticores are poisonous and therefore not really affected by the poison? The story did mention that Kanon was suspected at first, but she had an alibi, she was too busy laughing with the other party goers.

dumb manticore

But...if she wasn't poisoned in the first place, why do the characters mention that she really died? Did she stuff herself with too much steamed buns that she lost consciousness? I'm at a loss here...

How did the poison work, anyway?

We already know that it works by combining two things, the tree bark and the chicken. But...how does the tree bark liquid come into contact with the chicken? The poison is on the hand, which then is transmitted to the silverware, and then...stays there. Just as a reminder, this is how a fork looks like.

fork

The poison should be on the right side, that's the part you hold to lift up the fork. On the spiky park should be the chicken. They're close to each other, but definitely not in contact. So...how?

Some things I thought up:

One, people of Gio Gehenna don't believe in silverware and eat like barbarians using their hands. This is the first thing I came up with...but the judge explicitly mentioned silverwares also being investigated during the autopsy.

tableware

Two, the poison simply flowed to the chicken. Kasumi did mention the liquid being indistinguishable to sweat, and sweat can definitely dribble down. This is the explanation that makes most sense.

sweat

Three, he poison travels through air. There's no mention of this at all, this is just something I pulled out of my ass. If the poison really did travel through air, then the whole handshake thing would've been unnecessary. Everyone in the party would also be dead.

If 2 turns out to be wrong...then this is probably a plothole. Hah, I'm such a genius, figuring out a plothole in a detective story. Who's the real detective now, huh?

Phew. That is all for this blogpost. See ya on the next one.

does spider have puss puss

Big...huge...strong lady. K-kind to me...
