The Story Itself

Out with it, Alshat

At first, it seemed like Misora is simply playing wingman (wingwoman?) for Yui. Going shopping for clothes together, looking for gifts together, strategizing the date and all that. However, after each night, Yui is shown to grow more and more restless. Yui being Yui, it looked like she's just growing more and more nervous at the thought of spending the Christmas with KSKN, but there's more to it...

different now

Before I go on any further, I'd like to point out how the story tried to put a humorous spin on it at first. With KSKN thinking Yui was sick and taking her to the hospital. It's a good choice for the story not to go full serious mode at the start, it helps with the pacing and being a Christmas story, it SHOULDN'T be 100% serious anyway.

hospital

During the day of the date, Misora, Hatsune and Makoto all stalk KSKN and Yui to see how's their date is going. It's going well at first, with KSKN being more perceptive and noticing Yui's new makeup, Yui taking the initiative and buying matching merchs for the two, and making snowmen together and having them look like they were kissing because some kid bumped into it. Unfortunately, Misora isn't quite satisfied with this kind of date. Not bold enough, perhaps? Misora decides to take matters into her own hands and pushes Yui into KSKN with her PSI, only for Hatsune to counter. In the end, KSKN ends up holding Yui, at the cost of her gift rolling away. Suddenly...

Dorururun....

Misora wasn't quite satisfied because she needed the date to be steamy enough for Alshat to come out. At last, the reason why Yui has been getting restless is revealed, it was because of Alshat all along! Makoto gets mad at Misora for using Yui as bait. Sadly, Alshat gets her way with Yui. Alshat blows Yui a kiss and puts Yui into a deep slumber. KSKN, Misora and Hatsune jump into Yui's dream while Makoto stands by to cover for them.

I always thought Misora to be a carefree, careless girl. After all, her preferred weapon is a minigun where the entire playstyle is to shoot as much shit as possible without much care hoping for SOME bullets to land. This story reveals that she has some tactical acumen in that incredibly messed up head of hers. She was perceptive enough to see Yui not being herself, and the fact that she immediately suspected that it was outside force at work also reveals that Misora has some trust in Yui.

Two Different Kinds of PSI Users

You know how all PSI users are always abused in experiments one way or another except for Hatsune? All she does is float around sleeping. Well, this story finally gives an interaction between two very different PSI users.

In episode 2, the group is walking around town looking for gifts. Hatsune got Shiori and reading pillow with a built-in warmer and Yui got a glass ornament with a pattern portraying two birds that symbolizes eternal love. Things are going well until the group notices a kid under the Christmas tree about to be hit in the head by a falling decoration.

Hatsune saves the kid by moving the decoration out of the way with her PSI. However, now Misora knows that Hatsune also has PSI...

She then falls asleep because that's her PSI's drawback and the group decided to call it a day.

In episode 3, Hatsune uses her PSI again to counter Misora's PSI. However, this time Hatsune is the one that notices that Misora has the same powers as hers,

onaji

These foreshadowings pay off in episode 5. When the two finally secure KSKN's safety, the two immediately starts "continue fighting". A flashback then reveals that they were in a truce to rescue KSKN and Yui. When they landed in Yui's dream, they were in a tavern and the people around kept spouting how KSKN and Yui would make for the perfect couple. It got so rowdy that they had to run away and KSKN disappeared somehow on the way out of the tavern, hence why he needed rescuing in the first place.

After managing to shake off the mob, Hatsune used this opportunity to ask Misora about her PSI. Does she feel sleepy after using her powers? Misora answered that she doesn't, but she does feel an intense itch behind her left eye because of her powers, perhaps different PSI users experience different drawbacks? Wait a second...

onaji

Did Misora actually gouge her eye out in real life because of this itch? Creepy...

Misora then brought up that perhaps she's simply more used to her powers and that's why she doesn't feel sleepy. Misora then asked Hatsune what she thinks about how much one must train to get used to PSI. Hatsune guessed using PSI everyday for 365 days would be enough. Misora then reveals that it took her using her powers from dawn to dusk everyday without any breaks, with the real breaks she gets only during the time she faints from exhaustion.

365

This entire exchange culminates in the two fighting over on how to escape Yui's dream. Misora wants to simply kill everyone in it, since they're not real anyway, while Hatsune wants to find out a way to deal with things without violence somehow. This was a great way to show how the two PSI user contrasts with each other. Their different upbringings result in different ways of thinking, and the story presented this point through their spat really well. Misora and Hatsune are definitely this event's strongest written characters.

Makoto...

One part I like about Makoto in this event that she actually gave her idea of a perfect date according to her. She wants a skiing date in a remote area where the slope is steeper so KSKN would keep tripping enabling her to keep helping him up allowing for more contact, followed by a break time where Makoto would spoonfeed KSKN her homemade lunch. By this point, Makoto's character of "tomboy that actually likes doing feminine things" is already super obvious to the audience, but I'm still glad it's still consistent to her character. Yui and Misora are surprised by the revelation, but the audience shouldn't.

unexpected

The part I don't like is how Makoto was completely uninvolved in the climax of the story, that is when the group goes inside Yui's dream. The justification makes sense, Makoto needs to keep watch just in case Alshat comes back. But Alshat...just didn't. I think the story would've been better if Alshat did come back and forced Makoto to actually defend her friends. You could make it so that Alshat is hindering the team's progress in the dream world from outside so that Makoto is both forced to fight AND contribute to the team even when in not in the dream.

Next, I would say how Yui is also pretty weak in this story, but she's kinda the victim in all this, so I guess it's a bit understanable. Maybe Misora and Hatsune just shone too bright in this story.
